A painting of mixed race, Juan de Pareja by Diego Velazquez.
Portrait of Juan by Diego Velasquez

Juan de Pareja is not only a figure in art history. He is a reflection.

As an black artist, a newcomer to Canada, and someone who carries Zimbabwe within me, I resonate with his story. Not in the circumstances, but in the quiet persistence. In the way he existed in spaces that were not built for him, yet still found a way to create, to learn, and to leave something behind.

Juan lived in the shadow of a master, yet he became one himself. He learned through observation, through proximity, through an unspoken belief in his own potential, even when the world around him offered little permission. This piece of history reminds me that talent does not require validation to exist. It only requires commitment.

In many ways, his journey mirrors the experience of being an immigrant creative. You arrive carrying history, culture, and imagination, but you must build your place from the margins. You must observe, adapt, and persist. You must believe in your vision before anyone else does.

This is why Juan de Pareja appears on my garments. He is a symbol of authorship. Of claiming one’s place in a narrative that was never meant to include you, and rewriting it with grace through fashion.

To wear Siyawareva is to carry that story quietly. Not as a statement, but as a presence. It is about moving through the world with intention, dignity, and self-trust. It is about knowing that you belong, even when you are still becoming.

The wearer does not need to know Juan’s full history for the meaning to exist. But they may feel it. A sense of rootedness. Of elegance born from resilience. Of beauty that is not loud, but deeply assured.

These garments are for those who understand that creation is an act of courage. That style can be a form of memory. And that to exist, to dream, and to make something enduring is, in itself, a triumph.

Be part of this incredible story.
